Mental Illness can be a stigma in many communities. Mental Health Meets Hip-Hop not only aims to break the stigma but aims to provide pertinent information to the community at large. Mental illness can be difficult to identify and often overlooked. We provide education and workshops online and in person to help individuals, organizations, students, businesses, and the community at large to understand and identify mental illness in culturally specific ways.

ALEXITHYMIA

TORONTO ALEXITHYMIA SCALE (TAS)

🌀 What is Alexithymia?

Alexithymia is a word that means “without words for emotions.” People with alexithymia often have trouble:

  • Identifying their feelings (knowing if they’re sad, mad, anxious, or happy).
  • Describing emotions in words.
  • Understanding the link between emotions and body sensations (like noticing that tightness in your chest might be stress).

It’s not a mental illness — it’s more like a trait or pattern of thinking that makes emotions harder to recognize and share. Many people don’t even realize they have alexithymia until they notice struggles with relationships, communication, or stress.

📊 The Alexithymia Scale

One common way to measure alexithymia is the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). It’s a short self-assessment with 20 questions. It looks at three main areas:

  1. Difficulty Identifying Feelings – “I am often confused about what emotion I am feeling.”
  2. Difficulty Describing Feelings – “I find it hard to describe how I feel about people.”
  3. Externally-Oriented Thinking – “I prefer talking to people about daily activities rather than their feelings.”

You answer each question on a 5-point scale (from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree”). Higher scores suggest higher levels of alexithymia.

🌟 Why Take the Scale?

Taking the TAS-20 can help you:

  • Gain self-awareness about how you connect with emotions.
  • Recognize areas where you might want to grow (like naming feelings or opening up in conversations).
  • Start important conversations about emotional health with friends, family, or professionals.

Remember, the scale is not a diagnosis — it’s a tool for self-reflection. If you score high, it doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you. It just means emotions might feel harder to navigate, and that’s something you can work on with mindfulness, journaling, therapy, or even creative outlets like music and hip-hop.

👉 Encouragement: “Understanding your emotions is power. Take the alexithymia scale as a step toward unlocking your emotional flow — because once you can name your feelings, you can start transforming them.”
